Lawn Care Services Lake Charles LA Contact us: TenderCareLawnService Address : 1497 W Houston River Rd,Sulphur, LA 70663 Telephone : 337-313-3002 With the right team for your landscape management in Lake Charles, you can install landscaping any time of the year.
When fall sets in, many homeowners think that just because lawns go into hibernation and turn brown they cannot install landscaping. The truth is, you can do quite a lot for next spring’s flower, shrub and tree growth.Springtime is too late for landscapingWhen the cold season sets in, many people focus on the holidays and staying warm. Not many give a second thought to their landscaping. They wait for springtime to start installing landscaping. Many miss this window of opportunity, as there is quite a lot that a professional lawn care company can do with your landscape in winter. In Lake Charles, and much of southwest Louisiana, we advise our customers that the best time for landscape installation is late fall or early winter. Springtime landscaping installation is too late. Here are a few reasons why you should work on your landscaping in winter:
Do plants die in winter? Most people ask this question. When winter sets in, the plants will shed whatever parts of their structure cannot withstand the cold weather. For shrubs, the leaves fall. The reason is that the broad leaves cannot withstand the winter chill. Only the hardy parts of the plants remain. The plant transfers all its nutrients to the root ball to sustain itself in the cold winter. The reason for doing this is that in frozen soil, the plant cannot get water. Therefore, it sheds what it doesn’t need and allocates nutrients into sustaining the important parts like roots, crucial buds, stalks and branches in readiness for springtime. Therefore, the answer to the question of whether plants die in winter is no. They just take nutrients to the roots to sustain them in springtime when they can begin absorbing water from the soil again. Can you do landscaping in the winter? It is not a question of whether you can, it is a question of how soon you can start after winter sets in. As we offer services for landscape management in Lake Charles, we advise our clients to start in late fall and early winter as the best times for landscaping installation. In addition to the winter regulars such as mulching, raking and in some cases watering, there is more that you can do in winter. You can plant shrubs, trees and flowers (we shall look at them later) in winter so that they bloom healthily and beautifully in springtime and summertime. Tree and shrub trimming is best done in winter Winter is the best time for trimming shrubs and trees because they are dormant. In fact, for some plants such as lacebark elm, we recommend that you only prune them in winter so that the wound can heal. If you prune them in the warm seasons, they can get infections from pests and diseases. When the plants have shed their leaves, you can see what you are cutting better. For example, for some plants, you can remove the old flowers. That way, when spring comes, the plants will produce a fuller flower yield. For some trees, you need to remove the dead branches and align the structure by removing the poorly aligned boughs. If there are weak branches that can break after a snowy night, you need to remove them. Because of the favorable climate of the southern regions, there is still a lot of green on your plants in the winter. However, the foliage could become even denser in spring and summer. Therefore, even with the evergreen plants, we still find it better to trim in winter. What shrubs, trees and flowers can I plant in winter in Louisiana? There are so many shrubs and trees that you can plant in Louisiana in winter. As we offer services for landscape management in Lake Charles and Sulphur, we advise our clients to plant their shrubs and trees in late fall to early winter – October to December rather than wait for spring. We do this because as the flowers and shoots grow so minimally in winter, the plants are able to establish their root growth and strength. Root growth is the most important thing in landscaping with shrubs and trees. Shrubs to add to your landscape in late fall and early winter Some of the flowers/shrubs that you should include in your fall garden include roses (perennials), Azaleas, camellias, gardenias and sasanquas to name but just a few of them. All of these shrubs are best planted in late fall to early winter to give their roots time to establish themselves. They also give a better flower and leaf yield in springtime and summer as opposed to when they are planted in springtime.Trees to add to your landscaping in late fall and winterYou can plant trees as far as mid-January. This is the time to plant southern magnolia, southern sugar maple, oriental magnolia, bald cypress, southern live oak and savannah hollies. All of these trees can be added to your landscape in winter. However, proper care and followup during the cold season is required. That is why you need to contract a good landcsape company to do the job for you.Cold season flowers to add to your landscaping in LouisianaOnce again, here, you are spoiled for choice. You can take your pick from snapdragons, verbena, daylilies, rudbeckias, calendula, garden mums, pansies and many others. All of these flowers have one thing in common – they will perform better the following year if they are planted in late fall to early winter. Sometimes, we also choose to plant bulbs such as crocuses and tulips in the last days of fall or early winter. We find that these bloom bigger and better during springtime. If you’re not sure what to add to your landscaping in winter, our landscape maintenance services in Lake Charles may be just what you need. We will help you take advantage of the mild winters of the south and work with you every step of the way until your landscape is fully established. TenderCareLawnService Address : 1497 W Houston River Rd,Sulphur, LA 70663 Telephone : 337-313-3002 Choosing the right company for your landscape maintenance services and grass cutting services12/25/2019 Look through the phonebook or search online and you’ll find a slew of landscaping companies that offer landscape maintenance services and grass cutting services. But how do you know which one you should choose? We’ve heard stories about how customers have to go through one or more not so pleasant experiences before finding a landscape maintenance services team that they love. Even if you’re simply looking for grass cutting services, there’s no reason to feel the pain of a poorly done job or a hole in the pocket. So how do you choose the right landscape maintenance services or grass cutting services team? It’s actually not that difficult at all. As a company that’s been in business for a long time, we can provide some pointers on how to get through the selection process. Here are some things you can ask – 1.Do you have a horticulture license? This confirms that you’re dealing with a landscape maintenance services team that is licensed to be doing the job and also strives to continually learn about their craft and can assure that they are skilled enough for grass cutting services and other landscape maintenance services. 2. How much experience do you have with lighting and water usage? When creating a gardenscape, it’s important to know how best to use natural and artificial lighting to enhance the look of your garden and give your plants the nutrients they need. It’s also crucial to determine how to set up the irrigation for your garden to avoid over and under watering as well as water pooling. 3.Which low maintenance plants would you recommend? Your landscape maintenance services team should be familiar with the plants that you want and have in your garden. They should provide guidance on the maintenance needs of the plants as well as their individual needs for optimal growth. The maintenance requirements of each plant should be discussed before integrating it into your garden. 4.What weed prevention techniques should we use? Grass cutting services don’t end at cutting, trimming, and mulching. They also require analysis of the yard to ensure that weeds are properly prevented and managed to ensure that they don’t spread while cutting and mulching takes place. 5.What is your process? Whether you’re simply using their grass cutting services or have bigger landscaping needs, the landscape maintenance services team should explain how their process works. Feel free to ask questions and determine how thoroughly and patiently these are answered. It’s imperative that they take the time to educate you on how they work since you’re looking for a team for the long haul. 6.Tell me about the skills and experience of the person(s) that will work on my job. It’s a good idea to find out who will be working on your project and what skillsets and experience they have with similar jobs. If yours is an ongoing job, will there be a new individual that comes out each time or will there be a consistent person that takes the time to find out your individual likes and dislikes and takes care of your personalized needs? 7.Can you give us some references? Find out who the team works for and what type of work they do. Feel free to drive over and have a look at the yard and get a feel for their work. Sometimes, the reverse can also be helpful, so if you see a well-manicured, healthy, and beautiful garden, stop in and ask the folks who takes care of their yard. Contact us: Author : TenderCareLawnService Address : 1497 W Houston River Rd,Sulphur, LA 70663 Telephone : 337-313-3002 Your lawn is a natural complement to your surroundings and your home. It can be an outdoor brunch place for a gathering, a playground for your kids and pets, or a place to relax and unplug for your family. Landscaping companies offer a variety of grasses but it’s you who needs to decide what you want for your lawn.
Since every lawn is a little different with different needs, the type of grass turf that thrives the best is usually different. Here are some of the best ones to fulfill your needs of a warm season grass: Bermuda Grass Bermuda grass, also known as couch or wire grass, is a popular turf across the whole of Louisiana. It’s tolerant to drought and some amount of salinity, but not shade. Since Bermuda grass is aggressive in nature, it needs a lot of mowing and generally lies in the category of high-maintenance grasses maintained by a lawn care company. Many types of Bermuda grass varieties are available, ranging from common one that’s suitable for public areas and athletic fields, to the ones that require extremely high maintenance and are ideal for high-end golf courses. Hybrid Bermuda grasses are the highest-quality turfs and are used in high-maintenance areas. They can be planted using sod, plugs or sprigs. Zoysia Grass Zoysia Grass is a warm season grass that enjoys all the seasons of a year but winters. It has both, aboveground stolons and below ground rhizomes which makes it so resistant to harsh weather. Zoysia is highly tolerant to heat, has low lawn mowing and fertilizing requirements and is tolerant, to salt and drought too. It has slightly wider leaf blades with trimmed tips. It is suitable for homes, open grounds, business centers, and parks. Centipede Grass Also known as Chinese lawn grass, Centipede is a well-adaptive grass for Louisiana home lawns. It is light-colored with medium-texture. Centipede is popular for its low lawn care maintenance grass. It has a low fertility requirement, grows slowly and is tolerant to acidic soil. Over-fertilization can result in excessive thatch buildup. It also tolerates little drought and does well in shade. Centipede grass can be grown either with seeds or vegetatively, however, seeding is recommended only for larger areas with irrigation. St. Augustine Grass Another well-adapted and popular turf for home lawns is St. Augustine grass, also called Charleston grass. It grows easily and quickly from 4-inch plugs and produces a coarse turf with dark to blue-green foliage. It can tolerate drought and salinity to some extend. But it has more pest problems compared to other grasses such as brown patch disease and chinch bugs. Now several improved varieties of St. Augustine grass are available with landscaping companies but still the common ones are Raleigh and Palmetto. Carpet Grass A native of West Indies, Carpet grass is also known as Louisiana grass as it’s been used in agriculture for a long time In Louisiana. It requires a little fertilizing, persists well in poor soil and tolerates light shade. It is moderately attractive, appears coarse and open centipede with the light green color, and has many characteristics similar to Centipede grass. This makes it a great utility turfgrass that blends well with centipede. There are several species of carpet grass that grow naturally in Louisiana, but the most attractive ones are grown with the seed of the common type (Axonopus affinis). Turfgrass selection is critical for its sustainability. It’s recommended to observe your personal needs and availability for maintenance of the turf and then choose the best one for your lawn. The easy way to begin is by recognizing varieties adaptable to your region and looking into the limitations of each variety. Winter is cold and dreary. However, as we offer other services for landscaping in Lake Charles, our clients ask about the best winter blooms. They want their lawns to look beautiful and break the dreary monotony of winter. There are many winter blooms that do well in climate zone 9a. The temperatures in zone 9a can go as low as 18°F and even still this is good enough to grow some lovely blooms. Plants that can do well in your landscaping in Lake Charles this winter Although not all plants handle cold weather well, here are some options that will not only thrive but also flower nicely and brighten up your garden. Hellebores These are hardy cold weather plants that will do very well in your garden. Hellebores or Lenten Rose grow well in zones 4 to 9 winters. They are available in many varieties, some of them growing to up to 2 feet and some that are quite short. Their winter blooms are vibrant and many people wish they could grow them all year round. However, they just do well in cold weather. Hellebores resist frost very well. They will last right through the last months of winter when the temperature is really low and the light minimal. The most common species are Red Racer, Velvet Lips, Pine Knot Strain Double Pink, Raspberry Mousse and Onyx Odyssey to name but just a few of them. Planting tip: Do not plant your Hellebores too deep because can prevent proper flower production. Winter Jasmine As a native plant of China, you can expect this beautiful plant to be quite resilient during winter. The buttery yellow color of the winter Jasmine flower is a breath of fresh air in January. When our clients for lawn and landscape management Lake Charles ask us to recommend a good cold weather bloom, Winter Jasmine is usually one of our first choices. The reason for this recommendation is that it requires minimal to zero care. While Winter Jasmine is not exactly a climbing plant, it does go over walls. It can also attach itself to other plants. Therefore, if you have a not-so-good-looking patch of wall, you can plant the Winter Jasmine there. It will climb up and look stunning with its yellow, 5-petal January flowers. Planting tip: Plant your Winter Jasmine in well-drained soil. The soil quality is not too important but do add some compost. Leatherleaf Mahonia Just like the Winter Jasmine, the Leatherleaf Mahonia shrub is a native of China. The plant has beautiful clusters of yellow flowers that spread upwards. It mostly flowers in late winter or early spring. Therefore, it adds a nice touch of yellow to your garden during the dreary winter months. Leatherleaf Mahonia is a low-maintenance plant. However, it requires enough space because it can grow to a height of 8 feet. This evergreen plant will keep its leaves throughout the year. For its flowery bloom, it does well in zones 7 to 9. In summer when the flowers turn to fruits, they will attract many birds, so be ready for some chirping and singing in the garden. Planting Tip: Plant your Leatherleaf Mahonia in acidic, well-drained soil and in the shade. Witch Hazel The Witch Hazel shrub will not only fill your garden with a beautiful yellow bloom during the winter, but it will also bring a nice scent with it. Being in the business of offering landscape management Lake Charles for years, we would recommend this plant for southwest Louisiana winters. Witch Hazel is a large plant and it can reach a height and width of between 10 and 20 feet. Therefore, it requires enough space. You may prune the bushes to maintain them at a smaller size. Our landscaping teams in Lake Charles and Sulphur also offer pruning services. Our team can restrain the upward and sidewards growth of this shrub to just the right size. There are different types of Witch Hazel. There is the American Witch Hazel, Japanese Witch Hazel, Ozark Witch Hazel and Chinese Witch Hazel. We particularly recommend the Chinese Witch Hazel that blooms in January. Planting Tip: You may plant Witch Hazel in acidic or alkaline soil but make sure it is well blended and smooth. Water the shrub regularly until its roots catch on. Kaffir Lily The stunning Kaffir Lily flowers from September to February and that is why we recommend it to our clients for winter bloom. Kaffir Lily is not a large plant, growing to about two feet tall. It performs well in moist soil, so you might have to arrange for watering if you experience dry winters. Planting Tip: You should plant your Kaffir Lily 2.5 inches deep. Space them at intervals of 6 inches and plant them in clusters of 4 or 5 for the best effect. Fashion Azalea For three full blooms every year – fall, winter and spring, this is a worthy plant to have in your garden. It does well in winter and it is recommended for growing in zones 7 to 10. It will add a nice salmon-colored bloom to your garden in winter. This is a carefree plant, and it will thrive well without requiring much maintenance. At full maturity, the Fashion Azalea shrubs grow to 5 feet high and wide. Therefore, for your landscaping in Lake Charles and Sulphur, we advise trying the Fashion Azalea because of its ability to give continuous bloom over fall, winter and spring. Planting tip: Plant your Fashion Azalea in well-drained soil and then apply acidic fertilizer once they bloom.
